Mission

The Herbert and Florence Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics (IICD) is an interdisciplinary institute located on the Morningside Heights campus of Columbia University and focused on the interplay between mathematical sciences and cancer research, collaborating across disciplinary boundaries to develop aspects of science, engineering and the humanities that can improve understanding of cancer biology, origins, treatment and prevention. The IICD also maintains strong connections to members of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

The institute will focus on understanding the dynamics of cancer at different scales: from cells to patients to populations. Among our research interests are cancer evolution, statistical bioinformatics, and underpinning technologies for understanding the three-dimensional structure of solid tumors at single cell resolution, and how the contributing cell types interact.
