The IICD Announces the
2023-2024 Seminar Series Lineup

The Herbert and Florence Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics will continue its seminar series on the topic of mathematical sciences underpinning cancer research during the 2023-2024 academic year. The monthly seminars take place on the second Wednesday of the month, 2:00-3:00 PM EST. The presentations are open to the Columbia community and to researchers outside Columbia. Seminars will be held in person (CUID holders) and online via Zoom.

 Sanja Vicković is highlighted this month in a career feature in Nature Biotechnology. In an interview with Senior Editor Michael Francisco, she recounts her journey from professional ice hockey player to running her own lab at the New York Genome Center and the IICD.  Brent Stockwell is a co-investigator for an inaugural 2023 Irving Cancer Drug Discovery Program award, established to help faculty accelerate cancer research discoveries and advancements made in their labs to the clinic. The project, led by Peter D. Canoll, aims to advance a new ferroptosis inducing drug (VP224) to clinical trial for glioblastoma. Read more.

 Congratulations to IICD researcher Shouvik Mani who graduated with a master degree in computer science. For the last two years, his research in Elham Azizi's laboratory lied at the intersection of machine learning and cancer genomics. Next, he will join Stanford University to start a PhD in computer science.

 Lorenza Favrot has been promoted to Assistant Director of Outreach and Communication. She has worked closely with founding director Simon Tavaré and IICD Chief of Staff Stephanie Velasquez (previously Sophie Thuault-Restituito) to spearhead the communication and outreach endeavor of the Institute since 2021.

 Khanh Dinh presented at the 2023 Society for Mathematical Biology Annual Meeting taking place last month at the Ohio State University. He discussed his work modeling cancer evolution in bulk and single-cell DNA-sequencing data as part of the Stochastic Methods in Oncology and Population Dynamics session. Read more.

 Congratulations to IICD Associate Member Ivan Z. Corwin who was named a finalist for the 2023 Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists in Physical Sciences & Engineering. He was recognized for developing probabilistic mathematical models of interacting particle systems. Read more.

An exciting symposium on "Single Cell Mapping in Development & Cancer" will take place at NYU Langone on September 18th, 2023.
