Canada UK Foundation Supports
the Deployment of Canadian Technology
to Cancer Labs

In January 2021, Dr. Karol Nowicki-Osuch, a former Canada-UK Fellow at the University of Cambridge, began his independent project as an Associate Research Scientist at the Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics. Through a research project supported by the Canada UK Foundation, he aims to widen the use of a new technology, Direct Library Preparation Plus, worldwide and study human cancer samples in unparalleled detail.

Edith Zhang is a PhD student in Applied Mathematics, co-advised by Andrew Blumberg (IICD Faculty) and Qiang Du. She is interested in the intersection between statistical mechanics, probability, and geometry, with applications to probabilistic modeling. Her mathematical interests are inspired by patterns and laws in nature.

Simon Tavaré, IICD Director, and the IMAXT team, an initiative supported by Cancer Grand Challenges, are using virtual reality to visualize tumors in 3 dimensions. Their work was recently featured in the 2021 Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center digital report and in the Columbia University Irving Medical Center news.

 
Headshot of David Blei They Found a Way to Thematically Sort All of Wikipedia on a Laptop: IICD Associate Member David Blei, received last year the 2021 Test of Time for Research at the NeurIPS conference for scaling his topic modeling algorithm to large datasets including billions of documents. David Blei, and his co-authors, Matthew Hoffman and Francis Bach, were recently featured in an article in Columbia News.
