Dr. Genevera Allen is a core member of the Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics and a Professor of Statistics at Columbia University. Her research sits at the intersection of statistics, machine learning, and the life sciences, where she develops methods to extract meaningful insight from complex, high-dimensional data. At Columbia University, Dr. Allen is also affiliated with the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience and the Zuckerman Institute for Mind, Brain, and Behavior.

Dr. Allen’s research is driven by a challenge in modern science: turning large datasets into reliable knowledge. She designs statistical and machine learning approaches that prioritize interpretability and enable researchers to reference the most accurate information. Her contributions span unsupervised learning, graphical models, and data integration, with applications particularly focused on neuroscience and bioinformatics.

Before joining Columbia, Dr. Allen spent over a decade at Rice University, where she held appointments across multiple departments, including Electrical and Computer Engineering, Statistics, and Computer Science. During her time there, she played a pivotal role in shaping data science education, founding and leading Rice’s D2K Lab, an initiative dedicated to interdisciplinary data science training.

Dr. Allen earned her PhD in Statistics from Stanford University under the mentorship of Robert Tibshirani, and her undergraduate degree in Statistics from Rice University.

At IICD, Dr. Allen brings expertise in statistical innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration, contributing to the Institute’s mission of advancing cancer research through data-driven discovery.
