Highlights
Headshot of Samuel AparicioIICD Affiliate Member Samuel Aparicio is a co-PI on one of the two NYGC research projects selected by the NIH Common Fund under the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Network. The research led by Drs. Germer and Aparicio, falls under the umbrella of the Somatic Variant Discovery Initiative Genome Characterization Centers. Read more.

Headshot of Poly Hannah da SilvaPoly Hannah da Silva (previously a postdoc in Simon Tavaré's lab) is a new associate research scientist in the Institute. Poly’s current research focuses on the development of statistical and probabilistic methods to understand various aspects of cancer and molecular evolution. She is interested in probability, discrete mathematics, graph theory, and algorithm.  Read more.

Headshots of Justin Hong and Achille Nazaret Congratulations to Justin Hong and Achille Nazaret, PhD students in the Azizi lab, who won the first prize award in the GSK.ai CausalBench Challenge. They developed a novel algorithm that improved upon existing graph inference methods by leveraging perturbational single-cell data to identify causal gene-gene interactions. Read more.

Math + Cancer
Dr. Vicky Neale was the Whitehead Lecturer at the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford. She passed away on May 3rd, 2023. After receiving a diagnosis of a rare form of cancer in 2021, she started a series of podcasts called Math+Cancer  to explore how mathematics and statistics help with cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment – and the stories behind the researchers making it happen.

The ICML Workshop on Computational Biology (WCB) will highlight how machine learning (ML) approaches can be tailored to making both translational and basic scientific discoveries with biological data, such as genetic sequences, cellular features or protein structures and imaging datasets, among others. This workshop thus aims to bring together interdisciplinary ML researchers working in areas such as computational genomics; neuroscience; metabolomics; proteomics; bioinformatics; cheminformatics; etc.
